Hello winter. Bienvenida Invierno!
I take solace in the fact I only have two weeks left before I beging to taper for the Tucson Marathon. Nobody ever said training when there’s a foot of snow and ice under that snow on the ground is easy.
It was -13 when I stepped out for my run. I was bundled up – maybe too much. Gloves. Bandana. Balaclava. Tights. Long socks. Two non-cotton under shirts. Jacket. Another jacket. As I was squeezing into my winter tights, I pictured Audrey basking under the Phoenix sun with a margartia. Hello jealousy!
Then I went outside. How gorgeous is this? I bet Audrey won’t see this on her sunny run in Phoenix this morning. Cactus maybe. In a little over a month, I will be joining her! I am counting down the days.
I was thankful that somebody ploughed at least 10k of trail. I had to be careful with my footing on some spots and duck for tree branches. It took me a few kilometres to get used to running on snow/ice. Had to dig deep to find my confidence. There’s nothing worse then feeling like you are going to slip, fall and break a bunch of bones. Some runners worry way too much about falling and it ends up ruining their run.
Of course, be more cautious when you run in the winter. But do not let it prevent you from enjoying your run or even getting out there. I admit I was not looking forward to running this morning. But once I got out there I loved it.
Yes I overdressed. I knew within a few minutes. That’s okay I told myself – Good practice for your desert marathon!
Happy Wednesday.
