Lift this: Barbell Club

I joined the newly formed CrossFit Red Deer Barbell Club at Ignite. This week the classes got underway. The club is designed to “keep the strength in strength training” says the poster. A big part of it is learning the proper techniques for the lifts. Wade is the coach which is awesome because he really knows his stuff.

I adjusted my work schedule slightly so I can take part in the twice weekly classes. I am not as confident as I should be with some of my lifts. Although I do the regular WODs, I don’t do a lot of skill specific training. I’m hoping this will help big time.

There were four of us on Tuesday – a couple and Melea’s boyfriend, Ben. I was clearly the beginner in the group. Our first skill was the basic squat. We did a warm up and some mobility stuff before we got to work.

On a good day, I have no problems going below parallel. I didn’t try to 1 RM or add more weight because I am a little hesitant about prolonging the issues with my hammie. It was a good first class. I picked up some new tips and remembered old ones.

Today we worked on cleans. I am not a fan of cleans – just yet. Sometimes my lifts are damn right ugly. I definitely need some work. I am pulling before I am lifting and shrugging before I am jumping. Plain ugly. But today I made some headway on my form. It helped that Wade recorded our lifts and showed them back to us immediately. (I love technology).

First two classes were great. Wade said he really wants to hear our ideas about the class. This way we’re actually working on stuff we want to improve. Awesome. I am really looking forward to tweaking my lifts.
