Mobility Class or Amy’s torture chamber!

Our box offers mobility classes once a week on Tuesdays. The time slot doesn’t work well for me because I cover city meetings every other Monday night (which gives me a late start on Tuesday). But I try to make it whenever I can.

Amy G is our instructor (see bottom right). She’s a physiotherapist in Red Deer. She’s super nice and knows her stuff. Our classes are relatively small so we get a lot of one-on-one time. I am surprised there hasn’t been a bigger response.

Giving some barbell love to our triceps. Hurts like heck but it works!
Mobility guru Kelly Starrett has this amazing MobilityWOD blog that has a lot of amazing stuff. Amy attended his travelling mobility seminar in Vancouver. She works us hard but it hurts so good.

Kelly’s tag line? All human beings should be able to perform basic maintenance on themselves.

Here’s a bit from his blog –

Amy G and Megan V pose after mobility class.
“MobilityWOD is the ultimate guide to resolving pain, preventing injury, and optimizing athletic performance. Humans have been evolving for 2.5 million years and the human body is extraordinarily engineered. While people are born with this incredible machine, they aren’t born with the right software to run that machine. The MobilityWOD is designed to help you hack your body’s mechanics and provide the tools to perform basic maintenance on yourself.”

Quite frankly I could probably use a mobility class every day. Running + Crossfit + mostly desk job = A body out of whack.
This week we worked on hips, shoulders and triceps. Who knew triceps could be so tight? We smashed our triceps on the barbell. Tough love! We also used some bands and lacrosse balls to loosen up our nasty issues. We always do a test and then re-test to see the difference. For example, we will squat. Do some mobility on hips. Then squat again. Amy says we should do a minimum of two minutes on each side. Makes sense & works.
I have a roller and a couple lacrosse balls at home. Every other day I work on my legs or my back. But nothing beats going to a class with a certified instructor!
