Jumping rope takes a mix of co-ordination, balance, agility and speed. I don’t have much of either but I can single skip. No sweat. When it comes to double unders … well that’s a whole other story.
A double under is when the rope passes under your feet twice with a single jump. We see double unders in our CrossFit WODS at least a couple times a week. If you can’t do double unders, you have the option of doing single skips. For example, if a WOD calls for 50 double unders, you will skip twice that number (100 single skips).
A few months ago I bought a speed rope with every intention that I would master the DUs. Well winter came. I got distracted. I have short-term memory.I lost my rope. And the list goes on …. This past week I decided enough is enough. I can do this BUT I have to actually commit to practicing. As much as I would like it to happen, I can’t learn my osmosis or whatever.
I bought a new rope. And I watched a ton of videos. I asked around the gym for pointers.
Guess what? I still can’t do them. I practiced for 10 minutes yesterday and for 20 minutes today. Clearly I will not be doing DUs in the WODs anytime soon. It is so frustrating.
While I was outside a little old lady came outside to take out her trash. I am pretty sure she thought I was talking crazy when I told her about my quest to do double unders. She told me I had nice legs or something. She peeked her head out the later to ask if I got “my doubles.” I could see the disappointment on her face when I said no. Sigh.
Must practice. Must practice. Must not get frustrated. Must not get frustrated.
