First really long run since October = Success

Hold your applause, please. I survived my longest run since October. With only 6 weeks and 5 days left before my first ultra-marathon, I am feeling the training pressure. But I am happy to say I ran 30K today with barely a hiccup.

My legs were fine and my head was in the right space. Truth be told I technically was on my feet for another 2K. Here’s the deal. I truly believe in running my long slow distance runs – slow. I like to add at least one minute to pace time. That would bring me to about 6:30 per minute. If I could stand to run any slower, believe me I would.

I completely buy into the “run slow” to build endurance. I do get faster runs in during the week so I am all good. There were 5 of us this morning who set out for the 30k. They started off at faster pace than what I intended to run. I ran with them for a bit before I dropped back to my pace. I just didn’t want to mess with my training schedule.

The guys turned around every now and then to make sure I was “okay.” I kept saying, I am fine really. I just want to maintain this pace. I felt bad for slowing them down. I wish they would have just left. It’s nice though they were checking on me. I could see them in the distance so that was fine with me.

Around 21K, I lost them. I blame a traffic light. I was stuck for a couple minutes. I kept running straight assuming I would catch up to them. When I couldn’t see them for a few kilometres, I started to panic. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to turn or keep going along the same road.

I quickly became disoriented. I had no idea where I was. I couldn’t tell if I was still going in the right direction or what. I did a few backtracks and loops. I asked directions from a few people. Finally I understood where I was so I got to my office. I prayed that someone would be there. By then, I had run 32k. I was done. I begged Paul to drive me to the Running Room so I could pick up my Versa. I am not sure I had it into me to run another 4k.

Thankfully he said no problem. I got him to drop me in the parking lot so no one would see me! Ha ha I know that’s pretty sad. Anyway …. Good run. Ready to do it all again next week!
