You can row, I will swim

Once a week I need to put on my swim suit. Talk about a stark motivator to eat clean. This morning I took a pass on Crossfit and met Karen at the pool for lane swim. In a moment of weakness yesterday, I agreed to meet. I toyed with the idea of sleeping in but a promise is a promise.

I set my alarm for the usual 5 a.m. crack of dawn wake up call. I had to scramble around looking for my suit and my bathing cap. I took a pass on goggles. Who was I kidding? There was no way in hell I would be going crazy with strokes. It would take all I had to swim a few lengths of the pool.

When I arrived Karen was already in the pool. She was doing laps with one of her friends. She offered a kick board and goggles. I declined. I think she was surprised that I showed up. Karen has invited friends who have stood her up at the pool in the past. Not me!

Truth be told. It wasn’t that bad. I swam the breast stroke, one of the few strokes I can almost perform efficiently. I didn’t count laps. But I did work hard enough to get my heart rate up. (Although I did rest every other lap.) It was fun. The best part was sitting in the sauna afterwards. I only wish there was a stream room.

Hooked. I’ll be back. Great recovery from Sunday’s run.

Later on, I felt a little stiff from sitting all day so I decided a 45-minute run was in order. I ran around my office and on areas where I knew the snow was melted. I did some random speed drills –– run fast 20 seconds, rest, run fast 20 seconds and so on. Did the trick.

It felt good! I wasn’t sure because of being on my feet for three hours yesterday. Throwing a little speed in the mix can be just what the doctor ordered.
