Box jumps & Cleans – Oh my!

Just when my legs are feeling better from last week…. heavy squats and box jumps are thrown into the mix. My poor legs are in for another tough week. Meh. They can handle it.

This was my first class with the new trainer Melena. She’s super nice and quiet. We went through the usual warm up and got to work on our strength. Today it was power cleans at 80 per cent (5×3). I don’t have a 1RM yet because I have been working on my form FOREVER. So I just did 55 pounds again. This time I feel like I really have the hang of it. Next week I add weight.

THE WOD:
5 rounds
Max reps back squat @ 75 per cent of 1RM
15 box jumps
15 DUs (or 30 skips)

BACK SQUAT: My goal? 10 back squats per round. Check. Since I haven’t tested for a 1RM in months, I may have gone a little too light. I struggled a little in the final round.

BOX JUMP: I didn’t even think about my fear of using a “big” box (okay maybe a little). I just grabbed the grey box and got to work. I knew my time would be slower because I wasn’t used to jumping on the higher box. Actually it wasn’t that bad. I nearly fell once but I got it together. No bloody shins here.

Glad I went. Felt good to be back after my four-day break. Felt much longer. I am feeling more comfortable lately and not like a complete dork. Yay!

  1. Good for you for using a bigger box. I'm terrible with box jumps and always use the green one. Maybe one day I will be brave enough to move up.
