Training for my first ultra marathon

I shared the news with the world on Twitter and Facebook. Last night I registered for the 50K Blackfoot Ultra on May 26.

That’s right –– 50k. What have I gotten myself into? One thing for sure, I know I will be spending a lot of time on my feet in the next five months.

Right so why did I sign up? Well I really, really want to run an ultra. I am so addicted to Trail Runner Nation podcasts. I’ve been listening to them forever. You can’t help but be inspired.

I’m not entirely new to trail running. I prefer it much more than running on the roads. You’ll remember I  ran the second leg of the Canadian Death Race in 2010. And I spent a lot of time running/hiking on the mountains in Grande Cache.

Since I moved to Red Deer I have run mostly on the asphalt. Mainly because I can’t seem to find better places to run. I’m determined to find prettier and more challenging places for my training.

I’ve also found a training partner. Yay! Mark L is also running is first ultra. We’re going to work out a training schedule shortly. I was told on one of the ultra forums to simply train for a marathon and add more distance to my long runs. No sweat. The long run is my favorite piece of the puzzle. Otherwise I don’t think I would be running these crazy distances, right?

I’m feeling more confident at CrossFit and I am starting to feel like the hard work is paying off. No doubt this training will make the transition a little easier. It’s only 8k more than a marathon. No sweat.

Send me your positive vibes as I take this journey.
