Why You Should Run This Winter

No turning back now. I signed up for Red Deer’s Hypothermic Half-Marathon. I’ve been trying to muster up more motivation to kickstart my training again. I admit it’s been a little more than two months since I seriously ran. Part of this was recovering from my marathon and my injury. The other part was borrowing from the I-hate-running-in-winter doctrine.

I am an advocate for year round running. My running does not end at the sign of the first snow fall. And neither should yours. Running in cold weather can be magic but it also can suck. With that in mind  here is my short list.

Why you Should Run this Winter:

1. Fitness and healthy is life long. Why stop eating healthy and running just because the weather sucks? Keep running. It’s never too early to get ready for bikini season.

2. Build your running foundation. Starting at Square 1 can suck in the spring. Earn those miles and put them in the bank.

3. Fight off Seasonal Affective Disorder. Winter can be depressing. A short run can lift your mood.

4. Greater sense of accomplishment.  Don’t be a fair weather runner. Anyone can run when there’s a cool breeze and the sun is shining. You’re hardcore when you’re running in -20 weather and your eye lashes are frozen. Repeat. Hardcore.

5. Be a running fashionista. Running clothes have improved over the years. There’s lots of funky stuff out there.

Do you have any other reasons to run this winter?
