Putting “Yasso 800s” to the training test

I’ve hit the big time in my marathon training. I’m adding Yasso 800s. (Named after the guy who invented them, Bart Yasso)

Basically the idea is to run 800 metres in the time you want to finish your marathon. For example, if I want to run a 3:45 marathon I should run 800 metres in 3 minutes and 45 seconds. Then jog the same amount of time it took to run the 800s (3:45 in this case). If you can work up to 10 intervals, you should meet your 3:45 goal. At least that’s the theory.
I’m starting to test the theory. This morning I ran 3×800 metres and a few 400 metres. I hit my goal of 3:45 on the second and third repeat. I sorta used the first to warm up which completely defeats the purpose. I want to ease into it. Besides I’m just a few days away from my half-marathon. Don’t want to injury myself.
Running fast feels good. Makes you feel even more alive. Plus I’ve noticed lately I no longer get random pulls or flashes of pain in my hamstrings. Yay! Strength training and stretching works!
For the next few days I will continue with short runs. Got to rest up for the big day on Sunday. I can’t wait to see Audrey and for Tara’s first half-marathon!
