Back to Marathon training: Day 1

I wiped off the dust and cracked open my training log for the first time in two months. I quickly jotted down a few details including my mileage and time.

I’m officially in marathon training mode. It feels good to get back into training. My leg seems healed and I am refreshed.

I love my training book (see Right). I can track my progress and I can write notes. It’s quite motivating when you flip back through the filled pages to see the work I accomplished.

Tonight I ran a steady/tempo 7.5 km run straight away after work. It was pretty dark so I wore my handy headlamp. I felt amazing and threw in a little speed work on the dry pavement. We’ve been lucky in Red Deer lately. I haven’t had to dig out the balaclava all week. (Knock on wood it stays this way until spring)

My next race is the Hypothermic half-marathon in Edmonton. I am training to break two hours minimum. It’s a little tough now to work on my speed because of the ice and the darkness.

I’m going to concentrate on clocking a few 18 kms and weekly tempo runs between now and February.

Once I finish the half-marathon, I will amp up my marathon training. (My first scheduled marathon is in May, and the second is in October.)

  1. I love starting a new marathon training program. I am not even done running the marathon I have been training for and I am looking forward to my next training program. I hear you on having a hard time running fast with ice. Sunday, my long run was on an icy trail. I ran 30 sec/mile slower than I wanted to in order to stay balanced. Good luck on your training cycle!
