Who's that girl? It's me!

Sonalee and Sujay included me in their invitation to a dinner party at Sujay’s colleague’s house. Just to get out of the apartment was excitement enough for me. A dinner party was a bonus. After applying tons of make up to my usual bare face, Sonalee dressed me up in one of her salwars. I arrived in style and costume as a light skinned Indian woman.

I don’t know what I was expecting but what awaited me was a typical house party. In my mind, I assumed the occasion would be marked with many formalities. I only thought this because Sonalee put the fear into me. She warned that the guests would be very inquisitive and would ask many questions about everything.

It was a common house party. Guests behaved like they do at a party. If there’s a new face, they engage in small talk with the unfamiliar person. I didn’t feel like I was under an inquisition.

My apprehension of eating with my hands was eased with the serving of pizza, potato chips, and garlic bread. That I could do without the fear of being watched or judged. (I know my qualms are ridiculous at times. I can see that. People get the strangest thoughts in their heads. Or maybe it is just me.)

There were three other couples at the party. All three brought their children. Ruby was overjoyed. None of them were as cute as Ruby though. But then again I am bias.

Early in the evening, the women went to an air-conditioned room leaving the men to their own devices. Talk centered on children, maids and other light topics. (Most of which I have no experience.)

All in all it was an enjoyable evening.
