Ultra marathon training: January training update

I am feeling good about my ultra marathon training for Sinister 7. Granted, it has been only two months, and it’s early days but I am happy with my progress.

The race is six months away – plenty of time on paper, but it will be here in no time. That’s one of the challenges in ultra marathon training – thinking there’s all the time in the world, only to suddenly find yourself staring down the starting line.

Mindset and motivation

Consistency. Consistency. Consistency. That has been my mantra. These early days may have included a few ugly runs and gym sessions but I know in the big scheme of things, every movement matters in the big training picture. I am putting in the work. I don’t want to look back six months from now and think about all the runs I skipped or missed gym sessions .

It’s been a wild winter so I have been getting in solid long runs and hitting my mileage for the week.

Now the weather has turned again so the next few weeks may mean more time in the gym and less on the trail. Since I am in the building phase, I’m keeping my training flexible. Every step now will pay off when it counts.

The Sulphur Mountain repeat day was a good kick in the butt. While I was sore for a couple days afterward, I’m feeling great about the workout.

As I continue my training, I’m focusing on consistency, recovery and gradually increasing my mileage the foundation I build now will make all the difference on race day.
