Weekend views: Wasootch & Barrier Lake

My weekend was pretty tame for training. Nothing new to report so I thought I would share some photos.

On Saturday Katie and I ventured along Wasootch Ridge. We had met at the trailhead of South Baldy but decided to go to Plan B because of the crazy wind.

The only mountain that came to mind was Wasootch. It was less than a 5-minute drive from where we were parked so it seemed like a good plan. While I had just been up Wasootch a few weeks ago, I didn’t mind heading up again especially since I learned Katie had yet to hike the ridge.

I couldn’t wait to show her my favourite part of the ridge – this little weird forest with funky looking trees (see above). I love this section. It’s about 4K into the hike.

This is one of my favourite ridges in Kananaskis. The views are so unexpected and beautiful. There are 6 or 7 peaks along the ridge. We went as far as the little seat, near the scramble before we turned around.

There was a guy and his dog ahead of us that seemingly went to the final peak. Not sure if he scrambled or went around. We lost sight of him. Despite the blasts of wind, we had a great day catching up.

Barrier Lake/Jewel Pass

Another change in plans on Sunday so I went solo. This time I decided to run Barrier Lake/Jewel Pass. Strangely enough there were only a handful of cars in the parking lot. This is such a busy spot for families.

Weekend Barrier Lake

I met two hikers who were just finishing up a sunrise hike. I keep telling myself I need to do a sunrise hike. Maybe this will be the year. Thankfully it wasn’t too windy by the lake when I started out. There have been times when I thought the wind would pick me up off my feet.

Generally the trail was an excellent shape. I am always thankful for those fat bikers who clear the trail for us runners. I took my spikes off at least four times because sections of the trail (out of the trees) were pure dirt. I can’t wait until spring.

Frozen water! I finally saw my first frozen waterfall of the season. The one above was little awkward to take for photos but you see the point. I took a photo of a bunch of fat bikers with their bikes.

Then I started seeing frozen water everywhere! I like all the patches of snow and ice against the dirt in the photo above.

All in all I had a good weekend.

How was your weekend? How did you stay active? I would love to hear from you in the comments below.
