For the love of running, get outside – Bowmont Park

Running in new-to-me places really inspires me to do better, to push myself. It’s funny how a change of scenery can really boost your spirits. It was super gloomy and foggy when I stepped outside on Sunday. I could have stayed inside but I know I would regret it if I ran on the treadmill.

When I am plodding along on the treadmill, I just want to run outside. So a little fog and wind wasn’t going to hold me back.

I headed over to the Bowmont Park Nature Reserve. The snow had melted significantly exposing a number of off road trails that were covered. I knew parts would be muddy but I didn’t care.

No surprise. There were a few people walking their dogs or their dogs were walking them. I started at the usual spot and headed down to the river. Near the water treatment place, I spotted a single track trail close to the river. I followed it, jumping over small puddles until it got too ridiculously wet and I turned around.

Back on the main trail, I could clearly see off road, well defined single track. I jumped on those and ran up and down the little hills. I followed a trail down into the valley where I came across a boardwalk, waterfall and very muddy trails. It was wonderful.

I am so excited about training this year, which is a bit of a departure from the last few years. I was always feeling so rushed and stressed that I couldn’t really enjoy it. This season, though, I am determined to have fun and enjoy very step of the way.

Bowmont Park is lovely. I hope to spend more time running here in the future.
