Let’s run into 2016

Nose running.

Eyes watering.

I propel myself forward as I challenge the long and winding hill on 55th Street across from the Michener grounds. There’s a runner behind me in a bright yellow jacket. I passed her near the Lindsay Thurber track. I had slowed my pace so she was right on my tail.

No we weren’t racing but I didn’t want to be overtaken nor did I want to caught “walking” up the damn hill. Because believe me at this point in my run, that’s all I wanted do.

But still I huffed and puffed my way up the damn hill to the light. Then I strategically waited for the crossing sign so I could cross the street.

When did I get so out of shape? I have to get half-marathon ready because I will be running the Hypo Half in Edmonton in a month. In a moment of weakness, I signed up for the race. I swore I would NEVER run another hypo but things change. Plus there’s a fuzzy medal at the end.

Seriously I need to “train” for something this winter. I decided to run the earliest race. Red Deer’s hypo is in March. I may still do it. I want to see how this half-marathon goes.

Ashley also signed up. He’s just as thrilled as I am to run this damn race. Actually it will be fun to catch up with him and Carleigh/Jon. I am staying with them in St. Albert. Carleigh is organizing a vegan potluck. We’re going to have a blast.

Hmm so I haven’t exactly sorted out my 2016 race calendar. No doubt I will miss all the price increase deadlines. I am flighty that way.

Come hell or crazy hot weather, I will be in Lethbridge for Lost Soul 54K in September. Registration opens in January, if you’re considering joining me. I would love some familiar faces and a hug at the finish line. Likely I will run Woody’s 10K in May. I would also like to be there for Diane in May when she challenges 80K at Blackfoot. Because I will be there, I will likely run the 25K. I’d also like to jump in and run a loop with Diane.

I am also considering a Spartan race too.

Any racing, of course, will depend on how my body takes the training abuse. 2015 was a bust and I am determined not to repeat the letdown for a second year.

In other news, I jumped on the Boxing Day bandwagon. I went a little crazy with online shopping. I bought these beauties on Altra’s website. All regular priced shoes were 50% off. How could I pass up this deal? I just have to wait until the spring now to wear them.

So what is on your 2016 race calendar?

  1. Moment of strength I’d say 🙂 I’ve got a little 5k in 2 weeks, any MEC races in RD?

    1. I wish! No MEC in Red Deer. I’ll have to connect with you in Calgary soon for a run!

  2. Good on you for toughing out that hill! It always kind of boggles my mind when I hear about people buying any kind of clothing online, particularly shoes. I spend ages in a shoe store, trying on different brands and sizes and can’t imagine picking out something from just a pic and some specs but, then again, I hear about it happening successfully all the time, so…
Haven’t thought too much about my race calendar for this year, I try and run all the races in the London Honda Race Series but made the mistake of signing up for the whole series last January but then couldn’t make all the races so I will just do it on an individual basis this year. Maybe throw in a couple more, while I’m at it.
Cheers! And enjoy the Altras when you get around to using them regularly!

    1. Thanks! Well I know my size so I just cross my fingers and hope they send the correct size 🙂

  3. Oh I can absolutely relate to how quickly one loses fitness. I’m slow, and up 17 lbs since the summer (that was mostly self-inflicted through eating therapy) when I had to reduce my running to nothing for a few months. Now that I’m back in full swing I’m slow and plodding. I hate it, but it will get better! And sweet shoes!

Thanks! Slow and plodding is better than couch surfing!

  4. I always say I’ll never run another Hypo, then I run another Hypo. Actually I feel much better this year after training over Christmas though I likely wouldn’t have another January marathon goal! Ever. Good luck for 2016, here’s to amazing running things happening 🙂

Thanks babe! Hope to see your mug soon!

  5. I feel crazy for training for a February marathon…but here’s hoping the weather in Phoenix on race day will be okay. I hope you have good weather for the Hypo Half! They always have such great medals.
