I stared down a couple of yams on my kitchen counter.
It’s always easy to go with something familiar and something you know. I thought about making yam fries or simply steaming the yams for the week.
In a rare moment of brilliance, I decided to make yam chips. I knew I could make them in the oven but I knew my dehydrator was more than up for the task.
I regularly make apple and banana chip but I have never tried my hand at potato chips. I knew it wouldn’t be much different than slicing up apples or bananas.
The next day I surprised my coworkers with a batch. They were a hit!
While sweet potatoes and yams are used interchangeably, they come from different plant families. Nutritionally they both pack a healthy punch. These are great options for those of you who love the crunch of a potato chip without all the fat and calories.
So if you’re in the mood for a healthy alternative to store-bought chips, why not try yam chips? (I am sure you could probably make them in a traditional oven if you do not own a dehydrator.)
- 2 or 3 yams or sweet potatoes
- Wash the potatoes
- Slice off ends of potatoes
- Use a vegetable slicer or a mandoline to slice the potatoes into thin chips
- Place on the dehydrator
- Dehydrate for 8 to 10 hours
- Add some spice to mix things up. I suggest using garlic or cumin for a little extra zing.
