I really liked the quiet town of Ucluelet, about 40 kms south of Tofino. Its name means “people of the safe harbour.” Someone at work recommended I stay here and I am glad I followed his advice.By the end of two days, I may have mastered the pronunciation of the municipality’s name.
I found a great camping spot that looked out onto the harbour. Now this is a view I could get used to every morning. I spent two days in Ucluelet. I hiked the Wild Pacific Trail and wandered the streets.
The town operated at a much-quieter pace than Tofino. The streets weren’t lined with people but there were a good show of them on the boats coming into the harbour.
You could rent kayaks or go on a fishing boat for the day. I wasn’t in the mood for either so I stayed on dry land.
I liked the interesting sea inspired decorative features on just about every fence.
I went to the downtown market. Vendors sold fresh produce and artwork. I went early so I didn’t take in the full-blown experience.
As for food, there wasn’t many vegetarian options. Let’s just say I ate a lot of fries. However I enjoyed a very tasty veggie burger somewhere (can’t remember name). I shouldn’t have been surprised. Ucluelet is right on the ocean. People probably come here for the seafood.
Ucluelet is a perfect spot for those who want to relax. It’s terrible for phone service so it is also a great place to unplug and get off the gird.
