Trying quirky New Year’s Eve traditions

Hasta la vista 2014.

I hope you enjoyed a year chock-full of love, adventure and personal growth. The last 12 months were all over the map for me in many aspects of my life. But that’s the point, right? We learn and grow from the good, bad and ugly. Things would get pretty dull if everything ran smoothly all the time.

I want to start 2015 off right by borrowing a couple New Year’s Eve customs from around the world.

A quick and dirty Google search will turn up countless quirky and creative ways to ring in the new year. I went the easy route and chose two traditions that I hope will lay the foundation for a fabulous, adventurous and thought-provoking 2015.

At the stroke of midnight, I will eat 12 grapes โ€“ one for each month of the year โ€“ for good luck. Hey, I love grapes (especially in wine) so this shouldn’t pose too much of a problem. Renee is having a New Year’s Eve/I am getting the hell out of Alberta bash so I will bring all the grapes! Just to be on the safe side, I will bring a couple bottles of red too. We all could use a little more luck in our lives. Grapes for everyone!

And because I am such a romantic at heart, I will wear brand new sexy red underwear to attract love and passion. (Sorry guys, there’s no preview.) I haven’t had much luck in the love or romance department since I moved to Alberta. Clearly I am do something wrong. I also read about a tradition where single people crawl under a table at midnight to find love in the new year. I hope it doesn’t get to the point where I am hiding under a table …
This article gives a good breakdown on how other countries such as Spain, Russia, Ireland and Brazil celebrate. What is the North American tradition? Singing Auld Lang Syne and giving someone a sloppy kiss at midnight? Yawn …
I am really excited about 2015. I have big plans and goals in store for the next 12 months. (Since this is a running blog, I will follow up next week with a running-related goal post.) In September, I made some decisions and I will follow through with them this year. I am so excited! I’ll tell you more in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, please be safe and enjoy yourself tonight. Last day of 2014! Whoo hooo!

  1. I'm really hoping to be able to stay awake until midnight. ๐Ÿ™‚ LOL….please don't feel the need to crawl under the table. I can't believe that tradition?!
    Happy New Year Crystal!

  2. I have a feeling that if I crawl under the table tonight, the only thing I will find are food crumbs and stray crayons. It's just me and the little man, and I likely won't make it much past 10.

Enjoy your evening and all the best in 2015!

Before baby days, my best friend and I would alternate hosting a little house party and play board games. It was always so much fun and I night I looked forward to. Not easy to do when everyone has such young kids that need to sleep.

    1. lol don't go under the table! Thanks so much Becky! Hopefully our paths will cross in 2015.

  3. Resolution Run is at 6pm on NYE in Calgary. I view that finish line with extra symbolism. Happy 2015!

  4. I've never heard of the grape tradition before, how interesting!

Happy New Year and all the best in 2015!

  5. Passed out at 10pm, woke up at 630. ๐Ÿ™‚

Never heard of the grape tradition either but that's not a bad idea. Does it count if the grapes were already made into wine?

All the best in 2015! Happy running!
