Marathon Monday: Base training for Calgary Marathon

131 days before my next marathon.

Don’t laugh but I am panicking already. I feel like I am totally behind the training eight ball. Crazy winter days that put your running on the backburner does nothing for your confidence. Days turn in to months and suddenly you feel like you haven’t run for weeks.

Then I take a deep breath. I told myself to use January as a base building month and a time to get back into crossfit & strength training. I’m on track with all that. But I can’t help but wonder if I should be training harder sooner. I am anxious to get into the thick of training.

Mother Nature was on our side this week. I got in a few solo runs and a couple with other runners including Brent. Brent & Yvonne are both running the half-marathon. Brent is training to run sub-2 hours and Yvonne wants to run about 2:15. I’ll be running with them in the months leading up to June 1. Brent is going to follow the same Run Less, Run Faster program that I am giving a whirl. We plan to rock the track workouts together.

On Sunday I went to the Running Room for my “long run.” I don’t usually go to the RR for group runs because I like being on my own for long runs. I am not hitting the big numbers yet so I reckoned I could use a little change & motivation that morning.

I am glad I went. I led a group of six guys for an easy breezy 12k. (More like 5 because one guy just took off like a bat straight out of heck). All the other groups were doing varying distances and I wanted something short.

Great run! I am so happy I joined them. After the run, Brent and I met his wifey Sona for brunch & the big shop at Costco. I haven’t been to Costco in months. It’s way to easy to spend money there! No wonder I rarely go! I snagged a great deal on chia seeds, frozen mangoes and avocadoes so I was happy! Costco did me in! I took a nap. (I almost never nap!)
Good week! I am still going strong with my January challenge of 50 squats, 50 lunges & 2-minute plank! In this coming week, there will be more runs and more crossfit! Onward!
Happy Monday! What looks good on your plate this week?

  1. Don't worry, you will be great once your training kicks in! What is a running room? It sounds interesting. I'm so jealous you have someone to do your track workouts with, they KILL me and I'd love to have someone to run them with!

    1. Yeah I think the track workouts are the ones I will need the most support. We'll be doing different intervals but it's the support that counts.

  2. Wow, your training looks good to me, especially with that fitness challenge! I'm hoping to be able to run in the next few days and this weekend I'm taking a trip to see a friend ๐Ÿ™‚ That should be a blast!

  3. Don't worry at all! My training plan officially starts next week. I'm starting to get nervous about it too though!

  4. Costco does me in every time…I never leave there spending less than $100…they should really rename it to $100 and over store.

  5. My marathon is in 88 days and I'm already super nervous too! LOL.

I was just reading your 'Race History' and you and I have a lot in common. ๐Ÿ™‚ I did my first half in 2009 and first full in 2011! I have yet to do an Ultra, but am planning on one this October. It's 50k. eeek!
