I always start with my A and B races then I like to run shorter race distances as part of my training. (I have usually picked my A and B races before the previous season ends.) This keeps things interesting and allows you to feed off the race atmosphere. It’s kinda like a pick me up for when the training gets stale.
When I look around the blogosphere I noticed everyone has his or her season mapped out. My main focus this year is to get off the road to run more trail but also to PR in the marathon. Two BIG goals that I have to work super hard to nail. (I chatted with Amber the other night about Lost Soul. I’m scared and nervous at the same time. This may be the hardest race that I ever run!)
Some runners are also doing challenges – run 2,014 kms in 2014 or run 14 races in 2014 this year. I can’t commit. (Also I am trying the Run Less, Run Faster approach for Calgary) I work some weekends so it is impossible for me to pick the smaller races now. My bosses are good when I want to book a weekend off but I can’t do that for every other weekend.
Besides I like to be spontaneous and see what race pops up on the horizon. That’s part of the fun. I’ve already scouted some races from Tina’s blog. Rundle’s Revenge and the inaugural Vancouver Rock ‘n Roll Marathon have already caught my eye. I am also hoping to do more hiking and road tripping this year. Decisions. Decisions.
Next week I am heading down the road to Calgary for the big route reveal party. I always like to have some idea of the course, particularly the elevation, so I can visualize when I am training. I am looking forward to meeting some of the volunteers, runners and race organizers. I am also hoping to leave work early so I can run along the Bow River before the event.
Sorted your race calendar? How many races are you running this year? How do you choose?
A co-worker ran Lost Souls before, so if you want any information I can ask her 🙂
That would be great. I am scared so very scared 🙂
I like you approach of having a few races in mind but then letting the rest sort itself out over time, that is my game plan as well, although I do have a mileage goal in 2014!
Yes! I see that! You will do awesome. Stay healthy though 🙂
I have two races booked, one for the end of March and another in May and one that I will register for in September (Canada Army Run) when it opens up but other than that I am playing it by feel. I really haven't set a mileage goal for 2014 either.
I like to keep things a little spontaneous because sometimes it just feels like work.. Then it's not fun 🙂
Aw man, if I ever did a marathon it would be a Rock n Roll marathon for sure. That's super exciting it's coming to Vancouver.
