Emily: I am a Runner

I’m giving a big shout out to Emily from The Salty Pretzel in today’s runner spotlight.

Emily recently celebrated her 21st birthday. On her birthday, she penned a fabulous post about 21 Life Lessons. Have a read.

Name: Emily
Age: 21
City: Saint Louis, MO
Profession: College Kid, Nonprofit Administration Student.
Runner Since: Seriously Augustish 2012, on and off since forever.
1. Why did you start running? What pushes you to keep going?
I started just to see if I could and I keep going to see just how far I can make it. I am inspired by the people around me who battle incredible odds.
2. What is your running/fitness routine for a typical week?
MWF: Run and yoga, TTH: Cross train (yoga, swim, or bike), Saturday: Long run, Sunday: Rest
3.What is your favourite distance to run? Why?
Since this is my first year to really race I haven’t gotten to hate any distance yet! They all have been great so far, I’ll make sure to keep the blog updated though!
4. Best running memory?
Probably my first real race, I ran the Color Run and it was a great atmosphere!
5. Do you run solo or with a group?
Solo – I was never taught how to run well with others 😉
6. What is your dream race? Tell us about it.
The Otter African Trail Run, I’ve always wanted to run in Africa and this is one of the hardest marathons due to the cut off time and terrain, only 53% of athletes finish sub eight hours.
7. How many medals do you own? Where are they displayed (if applicable)?
One, this is my first year to race so I don’t have a need for the rack yet. It’s hanging from my bedroom door at the moment.
8. Do you have any current running goals?
I plan on doing my first marathon April 2014 and am looking forward to Ironman Wisconsin in September 2015!
9. What is your worst running moment?
Ek. Hm, probably a marathon training run. I went out without water (I usually wear a bladder) and got about two miles in and doubled over with cramps. I laid on a picnic bench for awhile before jogging very very slowly back home. Lesson learned: the bladder is key!
10. If you could tell your younger (less experienced) running self something, what would you say?
It is more than ok to go slow, if you go too fast and injury yourself you won’t even be able to go slow.
