I have been putting my homemade chili oil on everything I eat lately! I love the instant tingling taste of subdued heat.
Chili oil makes everything better from a drizzle on your noodles to a couple spoonfuls on my salad or tofu. I’ve been buying chili oil for years but I have never thought about making my own batch.
Like anytime I decide to create a new recipe, I googled the heck out of it before I tried making the condiment. There’s two basic ingredients for every chili oil recipe – oil and spices. I went with my Korean roots and used gochugaru for my heat.
Easy Chili Oil
Ingredients

- 1 star anise
- 3 cardamon pods
- 1 teaspoon of sesame seeds
- 3 garlic gloves diced
- 1 ginger glove

Directions
- Toast spices in pot for about 3 minutes until you can smell them
- Remove spices from pot
- Heat oil in pot for about a minute
- Add garlic and ginger, fry for about 3 minutes
- Remove ingredients and transfer to paper
- Add toasted spices and gochugaru to oil, cook for a minute or two
- Let oil cool before storing/serving
Here are some delicious ways to use your new oil. Above all I encourage you to have some fun with it and experiment.
