I returned to Northover Ridge recently with a group of Calgary Trail Runners.
Northover Ridge is generally an end of season run because of the snow pack. But this year’s timely melt helped accelerate adventures in many areas that typically only have a small window of opportunity.
Runners were up on the ridge as early as June. I knew that I wanted to stand upon the ridge again because it has been truly one of my favourite trail runs in the Canadian Rockies.
I love my solo runs and adventures but this 35-kilometre route is one you should experience with others. The views along the Continental Divide will simply take your breath away.
I posted the Northover Ridge run on CTR and before long there was a solid number of runners signed up for the day of adventure. After some quick intros at the trailhead, we set off for a long day of adventure.
The run up to the ridge was uneventful. The trail was in good condition and our group was in good spirits. Our group was solid and before too long people settled into pace groups. Throughout the day we would move around somewhat between the group.
Once we hit the ridge, more phones were brought out as we tried to capture the beauty of the surrounding mountains, alpine lakes and glaciers. There is one spot on the ridge that is sketchy and I kept wondering where it was exactly. I was on the ridge two years ago so I guess my confidence has gone a lot since then.
We took on the ridge for about 20 minutes simply taking in the views and having some snacks. Then it was mostly all downhill from there. Leaving the ridge was bittersweet. It was just so darn beautiful.
The second half of the run was lovely too with Aster Lake and lovely meadows full of wildflowers. Several of us (myself included) ran out of water in the last few kilometres.
Northover Ridge never disappoints. I was happy to share it with some new and old running buddies this year.
Cool post. Enjoyed it.
