Right about now I should be staring down my taper. I should be giving my legs extra time to rest and heal to be ready for my next big race – Lost Soul Ultra in Lethbridge. I don’t usually taper for long periods because quite frankly my volume isn’t that high.
Since Elk Valley, however, I have been taking it somewhat easy on the elevation front. I’m happy just to get in some solid running (even if it is around and around Nose Hill).
I have to tell you – despite the less volume year-over-year – I feel pretty darn good. I mean my legs feel pretty awesome. It’s taken way longer that I would have liked for my ankle to heal but it’s finally feeling strong. Man people were right when they said it could take up to a year for an ankle to heal completely.
I try to count my blessings every day. The ankle sprain could have been much worse. I am thankful it was just a short blurp in the big scheme of things. I am thankful that I am able to run, hike and dance.
Next two weeks
I am focusing on getting enough sleep and feeding my body all the plants it needs to help me get to race day healthy and happy. A few days before Lost Soul, I am moving …. again. At least this time, it is just across Calgary. I am being super organized and chill so I won’t get stressed.
I’ll do my last really long runs and elevation gains this weekend. I won’t stress about getting more kilometres in because I feel strong and I trust the training I have done over the last few months. I am excited about this year’s Lost Soul Ultra. It’s going to be awesome.
Catching up on Prairie Mountain
A couple weeks ago I caught up with my pal Mike who I used to hike/run a lot with when I was first starting out with running in Grande Prairie. There was a group of us that would go to Grande Cache every other weekend to train for Death Race or just to hike. Great group.
So I was thrilled when Mike reached out while he was in Calgary for work. Unfortunately the weather was mostly crap, as it has been for weeks. I decided we would do a simple up and down on Prairie. Mike had done the Spartan race the day before so I wasn’t sure what he would be up for. Thankfully he was game and we braved the rain and the fog and conquered Prairie.
How is your summer going? Have you caught up with old friends? What have you crossed off your summer ‘to do’ list?
