End of the gardening season

Hey friends.

It’s that time of year again.

Fall.

I love fall. It’s my favourite time of the year. The nights are already cooler and the light frost has dusted the ground overnight. The freshness in the mornings is welcoming but it also signals the end of the gardening season

I went to my garden this weekend to dig up my potatoes. It was my first year planting potatoes. They grew brilliantly. In fact – despite the slow start – most everything I planted grew. But the clear winners were zucchini, Swiss chard and collard greens. I froze a lot of my collard greens and kale for the winter. They are great in smoothies and soups! Five zucchini are sitting on my counter. I let them grow too big. I can always count on my zucchini to round out my garden.

NEXT YEAR

Next time I have to read the instructions on the watermelon seed package. Not one plant came up. There was some sign of life but I clearly did not plant as suggested. My carrots, on the other hand, were very spotty. A row of carrots that managed to grow disappeared. I think there’s a carrot theft in north Red Deer.

How did your garden grow this year?
