I never get tired of this first glimpse of the mountains. It comes into view at a grassy bit after a 11K slog across a log road, wooded mountain bike trails and gravel roads. It’s a welcome sight. From here I know I have about 3K before I reach the false summit (below the fire tower).
I finally remembered to wear my Lone Peaks on Saturday. I have been wearing my old Peregrines on the trail and my road Altras around the city. I developed blisters wearing Altra Torins, which I think were too small. So I was hesitant to wear my Lone Peaks on a longer run. But I had no reason to worry, they were just fine.
I love them. So bouncy! They’re a bit too clean, right? I must work on that!
This week I ran a second 70K plus week. I would like to get up to 80K before Iron Legs in August. I read somewhere that I should get my long runs up to 60 per cent of my race distance, which would translate to 33K for Lost Soul’s 54K. I would feel more comfortable getting in something in the 35K to 40K range in the coming weeks.
There’s a big difference between 33K and 54K. I would rather run a longer distance just for the confidence factor. I often hear from marathoners who always say they wish they ran more than 32K in their training. I don’t want to worry about this in September. Time to get my high mileage on!
Bring on the trail.
