Reasons to Grow Your Own Food

Watermelon. Carrots. Kale. Collards. Beets. Zucchini. Lettuce. Potatoes. Cucumbers. Squash. Spinach. Swiss Chard.

I’m growing my own food for the third straight year. I decided to plant the entire community plot on my own. In my first two years, I shared a medium-sized plot with either Renee and Jack. This year I needed more space so I could experiment with different vegetables (and fruit).

Because of the unseasonal weather, we were able to get into our garden plots a few weeks early. As a general rule,  most people plant their gardens on the May long weekend. In the past two years, I followed suit or a week later. Rain is in the forecast for the next few days so I knew it would be in garden’s best interest to plant before the rain came. The soil was not dirt dry, which helped with the planting. Most people have already planted too.

I have a good feeling about this year’s harvest.

I know people say gardening is a lot of work but I have to disagree. It’s not work when you love what you do. Chances are if you plant a seed, it will grow. Not too difficult but it is the weeding and watering that turns people off from gardening. The harvest is well worth the elbow grease.

I have a sense of accomplishment from growing from ground to table. It’s a great feeling. As a vegan/vegetarian/herbivore/plant-based eater, I go through A LOT of veggies and fruit in any given week. I love knowing that my food is free of all the pesticide crap and has not travelled a thousand miles to reach my table.

Do you grow your own food? What do you like to plant?

  1. I can only imagine how much produce you go through!! We go through a ton thanks to my fruit-a-vore children 🙂 I’ve got my garden about half planted, and will finish it off this weekend. I’m planning tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, beets, zucchini, radishes, lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, beans, peas and a pumpkin plant for my kids! I also picked up some raspberry bushes and strawberries this year, hopefully those keep coming back! The best thing is how much my kids love the garden, they eat vegi’s right out of it all summer, stuff that I couldn’t bribe them to eat from the table they snack on fresh from the garden.

I love raspberries! There’s a fruit forest near my garden so I enjoy the crab apples too! That’s wonderful that you are getting your kiddies involved with the garden. I will buy the rest from the public market like tomatoes. Fruit a vore is an awesome term!
