It was only two days earlier I was saying you won’t catch me running indoors this winter unless it was -30C. Funny how things work out. I was at the Penhold track on Saturday afternoon for a some speed work and steady running.
I’ve been dying to try out my Torin 2.0 from Altra since I picked up the beauties for half-price on Boxing Day. As you know I won a pair of Lone Peak 2.5 late last year. I totally fell in love with them. I need a pair of road shoes so why not try the Torins? I know a handful of runners who swear by Altras and I trust their input.
Thankfully a hockey game was ending when I stepped out on the track. It’s quite annoying to bob and weave around startled-looking hockey moms and dads. I kid you not. They will stare at you coming around the oval but will not more an inch. So you have the option of plowing right through them or running around them. I’ll let you guess what I like to do on occasion.
I love this track because it’s cool and it is slightly larger than the Collicutt Centre track. Brent and I used to run here a lot a couple of years ago. I like that I won’t run into people I know. Don’t get me wrong, I am not completely anti-social. I just like to focus on my workout without distractions.
I wasn’t sure how my legs would be up to a ‘faster’ pace. I practiced yoga at 8 a.m. and they were feeling a little tight. I blame the Wednesday night backsquats. Surprisingly the short run worked out the aches and pains. I ran around and around the oval at an easy pace for about 20 minutes. For the last 10 minutes I picked up the pace on every loop. By the end I was gasping for air.
The GPS signal is lost in the arena so I had no idea where I was with pace. But that’s okay. I like to run by feel when I can. So the Torins? Loved them so far. You can’t really tell in a short run like this but early signs indicate they are clear winners.
I didn’t want to break tradition so I had a glass of white wine after my workout. (The red wine was crap so I went with white.) The last time I was here the bar next to the track was closed. I think that’s a sign that I need to run more on the track.
Do you run on the track in the winter?
How do you keep yourself from going crazy?
Those shoes look fab! I’m still a winter chicken and run mostly on the track or treadmill right now – despite the lovely warm weather we’ve been getting. My longer runs are making these choices difficult though…lol.
