All things Bikram Yoga

I thought I would give you an update on my progress with Bikram Yoga. As you know I signed up for the $39 newbie price for a month. So far, so good. I feel amazing after my classes. It must be all those nasty toxins that I am sweating out of my body.

It only took me a zillions years to get my butt into a class. Everyone told me I would love it – they were right. I had wanted to check out classes when I lived in the north but u knew it would be a waste of time because I couldn’t afford the classes. (I was barely surviving in Grande Prairie on reporter’s salary) I had plenty of books and a few DVDs. But it wasn’t the same thing. I wasn’t sure if I was doing the postures correctly or I was simply wasting my time.

Since I went to the first class with Laura, I have practised at the studio eight times. (I like to get my money’s worth) It gets better with every class. I think I have found the right amount of water to drink before class. I’ve been slacking for months on my water intake. This has been a dehydration wake up call. I read somewhere that women should drink between 1.5 and 2 litres of water each day and more if you’re active.
I have been drinking four litres on the day that I practice yoga. It seems to be doing the trick. I didn’t feel or notice the heat during my last two classes. I had felt dizzy during a couple of the postures in a few of my earlier classes.

I have been trying to go on the same day that I do crossfit. A few times I tried to go to crossfit after doing the yoga the night before, it didn’t work out so well. I am still dehydrated from the night before and a little sleepy at 5 a.m.

The yoga instructors are super friendly and they really know their stuff. I loved that I received a follow up phone call and email from the studio. I feel special πŸ™‚

While I love Bikram yoga, I am on the fence about signing another contract. Fitness classes and gym memberships are not cheap. I already pay $126 a month for crossfit. I only go three times a week and I still feel like I am not getting my money’s worth. They have a special for $99 a month for three months but you have to cancel with written notice … blah blah blah. After that I don’t know if the price goes up or what.

Anyway I am still deciding. I would love to continue going but I know once the winter ends I will be busy ultra training. Decisions. I think it would be awesome for the winter but I am a little cheap.  Not everyone in Alberta makes the big bucks. On top of the montly fee, I would have to buy proper hot yoga clothing and a better mat. I have to find a way to cut out another $99 (plus taxes) out of my monthly budget.

Any suggestions?

  1. I love bikram yoga. I was the same way, it took me forever to go! Drinking water seriously makes the world of difference. Days I haven't drank enough I get really dizzy.
I'm the same as you about the cost though. It's hard to do everything so sometimes something has to go. I've been wanting to try crossfit but its so crazy expensive!

  2. I'm a drop-in yoga goer. Though I would love to attend a regular class it just doesn't fit my lifestyle (little kids, husband away a lot). I'd say start saving your pennies….but we can't even do that any more πŸ˜‰

  3. Glad you're enjoying bikram yoga! It would be great to stick with it, maybe you can find another awesome studio that's got a deal going on? The studio I go to have 10 class cards that are somewhat affordable. It really makes a difference when you have someone who can correct you!

  4. The feeling after a hot yoga class is indescribable! Especially when it's cold outside πŸ™‚ I usually do the drop in fee and used to make a habit of going every Thursday night but it's been awhile since I've been in that routine. I agree, I struggle with the costs vs. value. It just seems so expensive, not to mention when you have another gym membership. Maybe it would seem more reasonable if it was the only exercise I did. Anyways, glad to hear you're enjoying it! So great for runners.
