I found something else to keep me occupied while I tapered and rested my ankles – Crossfit! I went a record four times this week. Usually I go Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I wanted to throw in an extra day this week because I knew I would be missing nearly two weeks because of the race and my holiday.
It was tough. I am once again struggling with going to bed at a decent time. Going to bed at midnight does not cut it when you have to get up at 5 a.m.
My legs weren’t as tired as I thought they would after Moose Mountain. Sure they were super tight (as usual) but I wasn’t experiencing any problems with my achilles or ankles. I think the shake out run on Sunday helped a lot.
This month our gym owners are using the WODs from the main crossfit website. Yikes. They are bound to be challenging. But I am looking forward to learning new movements and trying different combination skills.
MONDAY
My heart sank when I saw that we had to do front squats and handstand pushups. I am not a fan of either movement. For one my legs are never in the right space for squatting especially after a long weekend’s run. And I am still trying to master HSPUs. I used the HSPU time to practice my kick up to the wall. I don’t have it yet. Sigh. One day! I think I am the only person in the class who cannot do this movement. It will be a glorious day when I can finally stand upside down.
TUESDAY
This WOD was interesting. There are only three GHD machines so only three people could use the machine. Our coach told us that she only wanted advanced on the GHD – those who have used the machine. There were only three in the class so that worked out fine. I don’t mind the power snatch anymore. I still kept my weight relatively light at 60 pounds. I like when there are situps or any kind of specific core movements in the WOD. Like most people I need to focus on my core.
WEDNESDAY
This WOD looked harmless enough but it was challenging. The running famers’ carry was a real bitch. We had to carry (arms straight, close to our body) a 5 to 10 pound weight and run 800m three times during the WOD. It sounds easy but holy crap it was tough on the arms and shoulders. I know I will be feeling this for a couple days! The hanging hip touches were a new movement. This was equally tough. For this movement, you had to hang from the pull up bar, release one hand and touch your leg. Quite the balancing act.
FRIDAY
Yup my forearms were a little tender from Wednesday’s WOD. And today’s WOD did not alleviate any of the stress. This was the LONGEST WOD ever. Not many people can do muscle ups (it’s a very challenging movement) so the majority of the class did 10 pull ups and 10 dips every minute on the minute for 30 minutes. Oh my gosh! I thought my arms were going to fall off. I still use a band for pull ups but I also switched to jumping pull ups midway through because I was hurting!
It was a good mix of WODs this week. I am relieved that they weren’t too leg-heavy. I ran a few times this week too but nothing too serious. After I run Lost Souls, I will continue to go to Crossfit four times a week. I think it will make a difference in my strength. I can already see some changes in my arms. That’s exciting and rewarding!
Have a great weekend!
Awesome job with the workouts Crystal! I have yet to try cross-fit. It kind of scares me, lol.
