Spring brings new Wave Rider 17s

I’ve had a $50 Running Room gift card burning a hole in my pocket for months. I didn’t want to ruin a new pair of shoes in this snowy winter. So every spring I award my winter running efforts with a shiny new pair of shoes.

I am Mizuno runner on the road and a Saucony runner on the trail. This winter I rotated between a pair of Wave Enigma 2 and Wave Elixir 7. Old shoes but they stood up to the test of snow and ice. On Tuesday I decided it was spring. Armed with my gift card, I went to Running Room.

I can be a creature of shoe habit so I didn’t look beyond the Mizuno shelf.

I quickly spotted the Wave Rider 17. I slipped them on then I walked around the store. I jumped up and down. Felt good. I’m pretty easy that way. In and out. No need to dawdle. There are miles to run. I am familiar with this series so it wasn’t a hard sell.

Oh I have to talk colour before I start … I only had one choice because this store is relatively small so it doesn’t carry much choice in design. I would have to order from another store and wait for them to come in. I have no patience and I couldn’t wait to try them out. I selected this lovely coral and yellow shoe. I may have to think my whole running wardrobe. I don’t think I have anything to match my shoes. Oops.

ROAD TEST

I’ve run three times since I picked up the shoes on Tuesday. One thing I noticed right away was the extra room in the toe box. I had to check again to see whether I had the correct size.

Interesting update. I am not sure how this will play out on the road.

The shoes are much lighter and softer than the Rider 15. Awesome! I like to feel like my shoes are part of my feet when I run (if that makes any sense at all).

I think the real test will be when I run 19 or 20 miles this weekend. This series is rooted in allowing the runner to rack up high mileage so I have high hopes. I can’t afford to buy multiple pairs of sneakers every year. I will be buying another pair in a few months for the trail.

In the meantime, I am crossing my fingers the Rider 17 will take me across the Calgary Marathon finish line with a smile.
