Overnight Oatmeal: Just one more use for a Mason jar

Sona and Brent raved about this easy, no-cook breakfast when they were over on Saturday night. These guys are definitely not morning people so I was curious about one of their tricks to save time. They are the type of people who sleep until the very last minute. They don’t even have time to make green smoothies.

I knew it has to be something genius – Refrigerator Oatmeal!

The basic formula: oatmeal, yogurt, milk, some sort of fruit layered in a mason jar. Put it in the fridge overnight. Presto. In the morning, you will enjoy a tasty and nutritious breakfast.

Brent’s sister told him about the overnight oatmeal and he found a recipe online. This quick & easy dish been making the rounds on all the blogs. I was familiar with it but I haven’t tried. Sona volunteered to whip up a batch so Brent and I could have some after our Sunday run.

It definitely hit the spot! Loved it!

Here’s their recipe. Gather your mason jars and the ingredients. I would put the ingredients in as listed from top to bottom in the mason jar. (Adjust the amount of each ingredient to your taste.)

B & S Refrigerator Oatmeal
1/4 cup of dry oatmeal
1/4 cup of milk
1/4 cup of yogurt
a spoonful of chia seeds
frozen blueberries (to your liking)

Nice for a treat! I think I will stick to my green smoothies but I do like this for a mid-morning snack. I am getting tired of my chopped veggies. Boring.

What do you eat for breakfast? Have you tried overnight oatmeal?

  1. I like refrigerator oatmeal, too, especially on hot days when I want something cold for breakfast. Yours sounds good!

  2. I've made oats in an old nut butter jar and was so not a fan. I like slow cooked oats.

    1. Yup. I tried it for a few days and I am not 100 per cent sold. It's okay once and a while. I prefer a green smoothie for breakfast.

  3. i need a baby slowcooker too for oatmeal!! this oes look super easy and yummy! a nice change too

  4. I've seen this, but haven't tried it yet, yum! I have done slowcooker steel cut oats, and those are super good, I also really liked baked oatmeal. Lately I've been pre-making a big batch of breakfast burritos and freezing them, I just grab one and bring it to work with me, microwave it and eat it with my morning coffee. Especially if I'm running or working out, I need a little more protein for breakfast.

  5. But doesn't the oatmeal go all soggy? No wait, I'm thinking of granola. Cold oatmeal. I'm going to have to think about this. Mostly I'm a granola with nuts kind of guy, sometimes with milk, sometimes with yogurt.
