Melanie: I am a Runner

Happy Thursday. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas with your family and friends. In the spotlight today is Melanie, a high school vice-principal in northern Alberta. This speedy runner definitely knows how to lead by example. I hope I am just as fit (and fast) as she is when I reach her age. Hell I wish I was just as fit as she was now!

Name: Melanie Matheson
Age: 50
City: Beaverlodge, Alberta
Profession: High-school vice-principal
Runner Since: 1983
1. Why did you start running?
Why does any girl start running?  I needed to keep the pounds.  Through the years, it has become my time to think, to distress, and to challenge myself.

2. What is your running/fitness routine for a typical week?
Two bootcamp sessions and 2-3 cardio sessions (running is my preference but to give my body a break I also bike or swim)

3. What is your favourite distance to run?
When my body allows it, I like 8-10 mile runs. It’s long enough that I know I’ve done something, short enough that it’s doable in not too much time.

4. Best running memory?
A girlfriend was training for her first marathon.  I told her I would keep her company while she trained. Three weeks before her race, I decide to run the half and ended up running my personal best at that distance. We sorted out a lot of life problems on those runs that summer.

5. Do you run solo or with a group? I try to run with a friend every weekend.  During the week, I’m on my own.

6.  Do you have any current running goals?
My goal in the winter is to run a minimum of twice a week – preferably outside.  A big goal is to run pain free again – I’ll get there!

7. If you could tell your younger (less experienced) running self something, what would you say?
Stretch more!
