Why I don’t have an “off-season”

I’m not one to toss my sneakers in the back of my closet and hibernate at the first sign of a snowflake. I am all season runner. I don’t believe in off-seasons but I do believe in adjusting goals when necessary. Being fit and run-friendly is a lifestye.

I find beauty and motivation in Canada’s four glorious seasons.

1. Spring

After running through blizzards and knee deep snow all winter long, I can’t wait for the first sign of spring. There’s nothing like the first run where the snow has melted and your sneakers touch pavement. Magic. Look around, you’re bound to see more shiny, happy runners. Motivation is very high in spring.

2. Summer
While I do have to adjust my running schedule to avoid the heat, I love running in the summer. I love to wear running skirts and dresses. Less is definitely more & motivating in the summer months. Nothing beats a cold one after a hard & hot run on a summer night.

3. Fall

Witness the beauty of the changing of the leaves and you will never stop running. I absolutely love fall running. The smell. The colours. It’s simply breathtaking. Trail running, especially, is awesome. Why would you want to miss out?

4. Winter

Alberta boasts five months of winter in a good year. Lucky, right? Mother Nature gives no hints. The frigid temperatures and snowy conditions can come as early as September. Anything can happen. But seasoned runners (no pun intended) just go with the snow flow. While runners love to boast about their “first run in the snow” and their “first -20C run,” it gets old pretty quick.

I always cut myself a little slack in the winter. (No dreadmils for me!). I’ve run 4 winters now so I am all geared up with my balaclava, gloves, ski mask etc. The better prepared I am, the better my run!

Are you an all-season runner? What’s your favourite running season?

  1. When I am running, I enjoy running in all seasons. My favorite is probably the fall, just for the perfect cooler temps. But there are great things about every season, I am just glad I live in a place too that has all 4 seasons:)
