His smile said it all. When Stephen Kiprotich knew he had the marathon in the bag, he grinned from ear to ear. I had tears in my eyes. It was so moving. I think this time watching the marathon had much more meaning than previous years. I wasn’t even running four years ago. Now I am a marathoner.
I loved that no one expected him to win. He rounded this last corner and surged pass the two Kenyan runners with only four kilometres to go. They never gave chase. He finished in 2:08:01. It was Uganda’s only medal at the games and it was gold. Priceless.
