On Sunday I ran my second half-marathon this year. I was part of a third person relay team in the Sylvan Lake Half Ironman. Catherine was the swimmer. Karen was the cyclist. I ran.
I wasn’t too concerned about the distance. But I hadn’t been running as much as I should have been. At least that was my fear. CrossFit has made me feel stronger but I wondered did this new strength translate into better running? Not to mention, I was curious whether or not my CFE clinic had improved my running too. This was also the first race and longest distance that I ran in my new minimalist shoes. Would my legs hold up? So many unanswered questions.
Around noon, I started. It was already 26C. Hot. The route was four loops. I planned to run easy for the first loop to warm up. I was too excited to run that this plan went to the lakeside within a few minutes.
I’m not sure of the times for my the laps because I borrowed a Garmin and returned it after the race. This is what I remember: First lap = Fast; Second lap = Somewhat fast; Third lap = Not fast and Fourth lap = Also not fast.
It was bloody hot. Fortunately some of the residents along the route had sprinklers set up for the runners. I was so thankful. In the final two laps, I stopped much to take advantage (and to walk). Catherine ran with me on the 3rd and 4th lap and Karen ran the final lap too. They were great pacers. I wish I had pacers at every race.
I lost some of my stride in the final two laps. I couldn’t cool down enough to focus on running strong. Karen and Catherine even poured water over head. Much appreciated. I felt more drained than tired. Heat, right?
In the end, I ran a 1:52 half-marathon โ my new PR. I was thrilled. (And a little shocked to say the least.)
The race taught me: CrossFit works! I am a strong runner. I am fully confident that I can run a 1:48 or better next month in Edmonton.
I also learned I hate running in the middle of the day. I am crossing my fingers it won’t be as hot in August in Edmonton.
