A week before the Sylvan Lake Half-Ironman

Next Sunday I will be running the half-marathon leg of the Sylvan Lake Half-Ironman. Katherine will swim and Karen has the bike. Meet team Ragin’ Rip Girls. If you’re in the area, you should come out and support the racers.

Karen and I met for coffee this afternoon. We chatted about our “game plan.” It’s pretty simple really.
Saturday: Pick up race kits. Sunday: Swim, Bike, Run. Done.

I’ve never been part of a triathlon before. I’m so excited. We’re going to have a great time. I can’t wait to see Tiffany too. She’s going to kill her first half ironman. Hopefully we’ll see each other on the route.

I ran 8k around 1 p.m. today when it was 26C out. Like most runners I am not a fan of running in blazing heat. I contemplated running 10 miles because I have today off from work. In the end I decided to save my long run for Sunday. I’ll just have to run before work around 6 a.m.
My left hamstring is still a little wonky but otherwise I was good and hot. My ass is still killing me from Monday’s CrossFit workout. The WOD consisted of 30 weighted lunges, 30% max dips AMRAP. I did five rounds and one set of lunges. So if you can do simple math that equals about 180 lunges. I am surprised I can still walk.
I ran relatively fast and I felt great. My legs felt strong. Maybe this strength training is finally paying off. I bounded up the hills with ease. I’ve been skipping my hill training in my programs because of all the CrossFit. I think this is a wise move. I can’t imagine I would have proper time to recover. As it is right now I am skimping a bit on the rest. I know. Bad.
Karen reminded me that my half will likely start at noon so I should get a few runs in around mid-day or early afternoon. Who knows what the weather will be a week from now. It’s been a consistent +20C week but a lot can happen in a week. Please send your positive weather vibes!

I feel pretty good running a sub-2 hour half as long as my hamstring doesn’t complain too loudly. Katherine will run the final 10k and Karen the final 5k. I know they will push me to finish strong. I hope I don’t let them down because they have been training so hard.

Have you ever been part of a team triathlon? Tell me about it. I would love to hear about your experience.
