Rest does my body good

My body dictates when I take a rest day.

Today the sneakers were left in the closet. It’s been a long training week. I pushed myself mentally and physically. My body is starting to get used to the early morning WODs and the evening runs. Still I think there’s probably a more efficient way to get my runs in without skipping CrossFit.

On Friday I ran a short 4k directly after the WOD. I was home before 7:30 a.m. which tells me I could probably squeeze a 5k in before the work day. I just have to run fast. And really that’s what these short runs should be โ€“โ€“ FAST and FURIOUS. Definitely something to consider next week.

Rest day or not, I could not sit on my butt all day. I wandered around the Red Deer Public Market for a few hours. I picked up some fresh spinach, baby potatoes, beet tops, cucumbers and sweet peppers. Love it when my refrigerator is stocked with fresh veggies from the market.

To make up for the time on my feet I read under the shade of a big tree at Sylvan Lake for a few hours. Felt good to be just a few sandy steps away from the shore. I’m nearly finished Scott Jurek’s Eat & Run. It’s really interesting to read along as Jurek begins to pay closer attention to his body while he becomes a vegetarian and then a vegan. Good stuff.

And rest, of course, is essential. I always feel so much better after a day or two of “doing nothing.” I’m planning a solid 16k-18k run early tomorrow morning. It will be my first long one in a number of weeks. I’m really looking forward to spending the time on my feet.

My pre-long run dinner: steamed baby potatoes, garlic red peppers with spinach and swiss chard. All fresh from the public market! (Save for the Heineken which is fresh from the Beer Store!). What’s your favourite pre-lunch run meal?
