Race Recap: Hypothermic Half in Edmonton

My first half-marathon of the year is done and done. My time, 2:12:38 was much slower than my first one back in December (2:00:57) but I am totally fine with this. I’m not trying for a faster pace until the next half.
It was probably -12 and it was like -20 with the windchill. The wind was really bad. Fortunately I made the smart decision to wear my balaclava. We drove the race route the day before. I find this helps mentally. This way you can prepare yourself for what lies ahead. The terrain went from pavement to snow to ice. We ran through a quiet neighbourhood and along the river. The scenery was quite nice. These last few months, I got used to running through snow knee deep snow not pavement. At the 18k mark, my right leg was in serious pain but I treaded through it.
Running has taught me to work through the pain. Oddly enough it is my left leg giving me trouble today.
Training and now completing the Hypo-Half has got me through the winter. I know it’s not over but the bulk of it is over. I can only hope for good things running this spring.
