We arrived Friday for the International Indigenous Leadership Gathering in Lillooet, B.C. Lillooet is a four hours north of Vancouver past Whistler. It’s one of the oldest communities in British Columbia. The town was small but charming. The eight-day gathering focused on scared knowledge, sacred lands, sacred children and sacred generations. Every day there were drumming, talks and conversation.
David Suzuki spoke about the sacred balance and rediscovering our place in nature. He was very well received by the First Nations and everyone in attendance. He was mobbed after his speech.
Herb Hammond from the Silva Forest Foundation extended Suzuki’s talk and focused on maintaining whole systems on earth. He had a very interesting perspective on forestry. If you are a treehugger like me, you would have enjoyed his talk.
Cirilo Perez Oxlaj spoke with the help of an interpreter. Fortunately he spoke slowly in Spanish so I could get the gist of what he was saying. The Quiche Maya leader spoke about year cero and the return of the men of wisdom.
