Okay so I will tell the story once more. Saturday night, I was driving my friend home, just a few blocks from where I live, so I just grabbed my keys and went. I didn’t think to bring my purse or anything because it was such a short drive. We didn’t get far as I was pulled over not even two blocks from my apartment. It turns out the registration on my vehicle had expired in August. Obviously I had no idea and I was frazzled and confused. In Ontario, vehicle registration runs out on your birthday not six months after you get the vehicle registered as it apparently does here.
Needless to say, I was very confused, frazzled and panicky. My friend, Joel, walked back to my apartment to grab my license. While he was gone, the not so friendly police officer told me to get out of the car and come with him to the police car. He asked me if I even had a license. Then he told me I was under arrest because I couldn’t prove who I was. (I did show him a business card with my smiling face on it but that didn’t work). Before telling me to get in the backseat, he asked if I had any weapons or sharp items on me and whether I had been drinking. (For once I wasn’t drinking and I don’t drink and drive).
So here I was in the backseat of the car crying my eyes out. I thought he was going to drive me to the police station and throw me in a cell. I was really confused and my friend was still not back. When he did come back, he was just as confused. I didn’t get thrown in the slammer but I did get a hefty $280 fine for driving without a registered vehicle. Oh and they towed my car to the compound. I got it out today for another $210. So here I was working on Sunday with no car and the police scanner. Good thing Canfor didn’t blow up. I don’t think it would have been cool if I had shown up in a cab.
Besides having a panic attack that night (I am sure Joel thinks I am a nut case), I was so pissed off. The officer was such a prick. I feel like writing a letter and complaining about the excessive treatment. I know I was in the wrong. I made a mistake through ignorance but still I know the law. I don’t look like a criminal and I don’t think I should have been treated like one.
Anyway that was Saturday. Other than that my weekend was fine.
This sounds like some police shit, what a bunch of pricks some of them are. Sorry about that.
I wonder if you could go talk to someone at the precinct. If you talked to them maybe something can be done about the fine.
Sounds excessive, but I think Canada is becoming more of a police state.
Andrew.
