Saturday kicks off the annual Cleaning up the Capital campaign, where communities, individuals and businesses do their part to keep their neighbourhoods litter free. I started a day earlier. Behind my the houses in my block is a lovely greenspace with lots of space for dog-walking, playing soccer or just hanging out in the green. But as you can see in the above picture, some residents feel that it’s okay to use this space as a garbage bin.
A perfectly good trash bin chained to the bridge at both ends remains empty on most days. The morons in my neighbourhood prefer to send their rubbish over the bridge and into the river. When I was finished collecting the trash both trash cans were filled to the brim.
No fish here. The river was full of plastic bags. I lost count of how many I fished out of the water. Just the other day I saw this boy throw his empty drink into this water. When I politely pointed out to him that the river wasn’t a trash bin, he said, Sorry. The garbage can right in front of him apparently was too difficult for him to comprehend. Dumb ass!
What I picked up: Tim Horton’s coffee cups, Wendy’s cups, Harvey’s wrappers, A Jack Daniel’s bottle, Various beer cans, Pop cans, Plastic bags, Plastic straws, Candy wrappers, Paper bags, Gum wrappers, 2 litre bottles of Pepsi, Subway wrappers, Cigarette packages, Plastic lids, Newspapers.
Stupid people think if you bury your plastic bag it will magically disappear. I uncovered dozens of bags, like this one that have been here for a long time. Get this people, just because it is hid behind a bush, doesn’t mean it is okay to litter.
What angered me the most today were the two empty garbage cans. People use this bridge everyday as a short cut from local businesses to their homes. They are two minutes away from their houses yet they throw their crap on the trails. The city provides a couple trash cans but they ignore them. This infuriates me!
Did you find any used condoms?
