Accidental Activists: The Making of

Truth be told, I didn’t mean to be a part of the march. In fact, I completely forget the protest was yesterday. I really need to keep up with my activist reading.

Nate and I decided to go up on the hill to check things out and take some pictures. After listening to a couple of speeches, we were so moved that we took to the streets with the colorful group. (This was after all the protesters finished with the photo ops.)

Another truth is that I really wasn’t sure what the hell people were protesting against.(Again, must read current activism news.) People carried signs about the environment, the war in Afghanistan, 911 and various others causes. One common denominator was the hatred for George Bush. I think I am right when I say that most people can relate to this.

I admit I had to read about the SPP when I got home last night. So for all of you who aren’t quite sure either, here’s something taken from a US website.

Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP):

The SPP is a White House-led initiative among the United States and the two nations it borders โ€“ Canada and Mexico โ€“ to increase security and to enhance prosperity among the three countries through greater cooperation. The SPP is based on the principle that our prosperity is dependent on our security and recognizes that our three great nations share a belief in freedom, economic opportunity, and strong democratic institutions. The SPP outlines a comprehensive agenda for cooperation among our three countries while respecting the sovereignty and unique cultural heritage of each nation. The SPP provides a vehicle by which the United States, Canada, and Mexico can identify and resolve unnecessary obstacles to trade and it provides a means to improve our response to emergencies and increase security, thus benefiting and protecting Americans,Canadians and Mexicans.
