A woman dressed in a beautiful gold sari whirled around the stage bringing with her images of traditions from long ago. Under the open roof with barely a few stars to light the stage, the fire dance opened the cultural and heritage evening.
I spent my last evening with a handful of other foreigners watching a display of traditional Rajasthani dances at the Bagore Ki Haveli on Ganguar Ghat road.
Indian women danced traditional dances for love, sorrow and happiness. Their moves were captivating while their clothing complemented their beauty. I can see how men find these women attractive as they mesmerized the audience with their eyes. Even the less attractive women had a certain sexual aura about them as they moved.
Because Rajasthan is known to have frequent droughts throughout history, women have been known to carry water for miles on the top of their heads. Fittingly the show ended with a lady dancing a water dance. She balanced nine water pots on her head and moved effortlessly around the stage.
It was pretty cool until she started dancing on broken glass. I don’t know what that has to do with gathering water. I thoroughly enjoyed the music and the dancing.
