coming out of the shadows

Remember when I wrote that I have come to terms with geckos accepting them as a part of my Thailand experience? Well not so much after all. After retiring to my bungalow last night, I closed the drapes on the window. Something, I am assuming it was a gecko, leapt out from nowhere at me. I nearly had a heart attack. This after five minutes before I told an English woman that they used to really scare me but now I am okay with them.

After jumping and squealing like a little girl, I ran back to the restaurant to get someone to help me. I looked like a raving lunatic. My heart was racing and I felt like crying. I tried to explain to the staff that there were lizards in my bungalow but they didn’t understand. So the honeymooning couple that I had shared my gecko experiences with came to help and calm me down. I was really freaking out. But in those three minutes that I was gone that damn gecko made his escape. We searched high and low to no avail.

Not comforted by the man’s reasoning that he probably left the way he came in, it took me awhile to sleep last night. I kept imagining waking up with a lizard staring me in the eye. Yet, I survived and here I live to tell the story.

With no particular destination in mind, today I went to the most popular beach on the island, Chaweng Beach. The main streets were filled with expensive and international restaurants. Beside them were Nike, Reebox and Puma stores. For a minute I thought I was back in Busan. The beach was fine but a little dirtier than Maenam beach. I think I made a good choice to stay despite the wild kingdom.

Tomorrow I am heading to Bangkok via an overnight bus. That should be an experience. I can hardly wait.
