No return in immediate sight to running

In case you missed it, I sprained my right ankle on a trail in West Bragg Creek nine days ago. My foot rolled awkwardly after I crossed over a little bridge. I’ve rolled my ankle before and I am usually OK within a few minutes. But this time because I landed so hard on the uneven ground, I knew within seconds I would be hobbling or crawling out of the trail. 

Thankfully I didn’t need to be airlifted out of the area. It’s been a week now and the swelling has finally subsided, and I’m able to put on a regular shoe. The bruising is still pretty bad, and my foot is still tender on the side where I landed. I have taken it easy and did all the rest, ice, compression and elevation for the first couple of days. 

My ankle was hurting in these shoes so I took them off while I worked on my core today.

Becoming a beast in the gym

I can’t sit still for that long so I’ve been going to Goodlife Fitness a little more than usual. I’ve been focusing on core strength and upper body. I haven’t tried to put too much weight on my foot yet. Although on Saturday, I did some lunges and I was fine. I don’t have the full range of motion yet. So now that the swelling is down, I am able to start doing some mobility exercises.

On Sunday, I dragged my butt to a body combat class at the Beacon Hill Goodlife Fitness. If I weren’t injured, I would likely be out running so I didn’t want to give up the chance to try something new. I don’t usually go to group fitness classes but this one appealed to me because of the martial arts. 

Two combat coaches for the price of one class. What a deal.

I went into the class thinking I would need to scale part of the class (and likely I would make a fool of myself.) I wanted get a feel for the class and shake things up a bit. I may have been the only new person in the class. Everyone was well co-ordinated and had the combinations down pat. It was impressive. 

I couldn’t hear the instructors very well because I was too far back. There must have been 40 other people in the class. Next time I will come earlier so I can score a better spot. The class featured a mix of various martial arts including boxing, karate and capoeira. There were two coaches at the front of the room, and they took turns leading during certain bits.

I have experience in boxing and a second dan in tae kwon do so I was confident I wouldn’t completely suck. It was a little dicey for the first couple of songs. I forgot that there’s a lot of counting involved with martial arts. By the time we switched legs or sides, I sucked less on the combination.

Capoeira, on the other hand, … let’s just say if I didn’t hear or what the instructor said I just “danced” in place. Got some work to do there. I didn’t get my heart rate up very much because I was really focusing on following along with the class. 

Return to running

I would like to say I will be back running by tomorrow. I don’t want to jinx it. I am crossing my fingers I will be OK by this weekend. I think two solid weeks of not running should do the healing trick. 

In the meantime, I am going to hang out at the gym and try another fitness class.

  1. I felt really bad for your injury. I hope you come back stronger than ever before. Every people have setbacks but those who are successful never back down and they always come back stronger. I hope you do the same. I wish you a very speedy recovery.
