Tina: I am a Runner

Surprise.  It’s bonus profile time.

In an effort to keep my blog alive during this busy July, I decided to post another feature this week. Tina is another Calgary runner. I swear every other person in Calgary runs! I met Tina through the Calgary Marathon ambassador program. I’ve even run with her in Stettler (of all places!).

On most weekends you can find Tina at the start line of just about any race. She loves racing! I hope you find a little inspiration from her feature today.
Name: Tina
Age: 46

1. Why did you start running? What pushes you to keep going?
I started running in 2008. Was turning 40 and realized I needed to do SOMETHING! I had joined a soccer team, and running followed. I had ran in high school but man…was outta shape and was inspired by a few friends who had taken up running. At first I was slow. And heavy. I was barely able to do 5k run. Then in early 2011, I started training for a big 12km race. And began pushing myself and going further. Finally without quitting or stopping because it was so “hard”. By fall I had lost 40 pounds. And then had run 2 half marathons. And realized I really could do this running thing. It made me feel fabulous. And, I wanted to do more. What keeps me going is the desire to persevere. Never quit. Never to go back to the place I used to be – overweight and unhappy with life. I realize I have the power to be happy, to push forward and be an even stronger healthier version of me.
2. First word that comes to mind when you hear the word “hills”:

I have a little poem I “wrote” when I began running hills in my first clinic:

“Hills Suck; Hills Blow; The more you do; The faster you’ll go!”
So suck it up and get out there!

3. Trails or pavement? Why?

I love both. If I could afford it, I would be driving out to the trails a lot more than I do. But, I can’t. So city pathways it is. And am very lucky that Calgary has some fabulous paths. Sometimes I try to shake it up and drive to a diff pathway area. Or park so that I can feel like I am on a trail!

4. Best running memory? Tell us about it.

I think the first time I ever ran a race that felt effortless was jsut so awesome. In 2012 I ran the Rocky Mountain Soap Company Women’s Run. I has done it the year previous and had really been training hard and wanted to see how much better I could be. In the end I ran that 12k 15 minutes better than I had  the previous year. But honestly it was not my “time” that I was so ecstatic over. I really was over the moon that I ran 12 kilometres on hills not stopping once, feeling like I was flying the whole way. Didn’t feel out of breath, felt so awesome the entire race, and proved to myself that hell yes…I am a runner. I am so ready to take on the world. And a few weeks later I ran my first marathon and man…did it feel amazing to cross that finish line!

5.  What is your worst running moment?

Last year at the Edmonton marathon I got very ill at about the 12k mark. I spent an eternity (over 10 minutes) in a porta potty, sick as a dog. I cried. I was in agony. And then I got up, dried my tears came out and ran the rest of that race. I cramped up the almost the entire last few miles. But I would not quit. When I crossed the finish I was initially so, so upset that this personal best slipped through my fingers. And then, while surrounded by good friends and family, I realized that perseverance made that race one hell of a moment for me. That no matter what I could finish. And that I would not be defeated.

6.  If you could tell your younger (less experienced) running self something, what would you say?

Have fun. Be yourself. Never take yourself too seriously. Trust in yourself and believe that you can. Did I say have fun? Laughter in life is where it’s at!
