2013 Highlight Reel: My Year of Running

Oh 2013 how I adore you so. Looking back I had some great (and some not so great) running experiences.

I took a step back from racing this year. I focused on my first ultramarathon and having a little fun with Spartan races. This was the year I wanted to run a BQ time but it did not come to be. And I totally okay with that. I love running more than ever and I can’t wait to set and revisit past goals in 2014.

To cap off this running year, I’m joining Miss Zippy and other fabulous bloggers to share my running highlight reel for 2013. You can also see a full list of my race history here.

Best race experience?

Gosh well I have to say the Tucson Marathon. While I did not reach my time goal, I had a great time. Tucson was amazing even though I did not meet my time goal. Great race. Great people. Great location. (I’m purposely ignorning the half-hour bus ride to the start and the chilly conditions in the back of my head)
Best run?
I have to say anything on trail. I loved the Sundre Five Peaks trail race with Meg, Laura, Melea and Catherine. We had a blast. I love trail running more and more. I can’t wait to run more trail in 2014.
Best New piece of gear?
My Garmin 910XT. Love love love this watch. It’s a triathlon watch that can do some AMAZING stuff. I’ve had it for a few months now and I am learning new fuctions with every run. It’s well worth the hefty pricetag! (One day I will do a proper review!)
Best piece of running advice you received?
Run through the pain … Just kidding. I always receive great advice from the amazing Amber Dawn Hunter. She always puts things in perspective and always encourages me to do my best and when I don’t, she doesn’t make me feel like an idiot. Great motivator!
Most inspirational runner?
Too many to count. Naming one person would be unfair. Lately I’ve been more immersed in the running blog community. I’ve read some pretty amazing and inspiring stories. Everyday I am inspired by a tweet or a new blog post. Runners are pretty motivating and inspiring as a rule.
If you sould sum up your year in a couple of words, what would they be?
Slow, Strong and Encouraging.

What made your highlight reel?

  1. Impressive year Crystal. We'll have to get out for a few runs in 2014. Not much on my highlight reel unfortunately except the RWRunStreak (about half done).

    1. Maybe you should consider the Calgary Marathon (or half-marathon) on June 1! Now that's motivation!

  2. My highlight reel definetly includes the Canada Army Run in September.

You had an amazing 2013, looking forward to reading about your 2014.

  3. I love your perspective on Tuscon–it's not always about the BQ! And love that you love trails as I do. They really are such a great way to go. Congrats on your year and thanks for linking in!
